Trailblazing keyboardist/composer/producer Jeff Lorber revisits a sound he helped pioneer on his latest recording, Galaxy. Following up on his GRAMMY®-nominated 2010 release, Now Is The Time, Lorber again culls from his early catalog but gives a fresh approach to some of his most highly requested compositions, including “Wizard Island,” “City,” “The Samba” and “The Underground.”

“Essentially this album is a part two,” Jeff Lorber says. “It features the same rhythm section, but it’s even more into the jazz fusion direction. It’s more energetic and the performances are tighter.”

(from RickBraun.com) Rick Braun‘s been playing trumpet since he was a kid. No news there for the legions of fans his richly melodic playing style has attracted since the release of his first album,Intimate Secrets in 1993. Less known is the fact that he’s been a singer, and a good one (backing Rod Stewart and Sade among others, with vocals as well as his stellar trumpet) for most of his life, as well.

Rick Braun Sings With Strings brings both those skills front and center. And it does so in a way that dips back into the

music he’s been captivated by since he first picked up a horn.

“This album,” says Rick, “feels a lot like coming home. I grew up hearing this music all around the house. Singing it, playing it. Listening to my mom, who was a singer and piano player. She was one of those people who knew every part of a song – the verse, the chorus, the refrain, all the lyrics.” 

The album will no doubt produce similar comfort feelings for anyone with a love for song. And not just Great American Song. Because what Braun and producer/arrangerPhilippe Saisse have put together in this eminently listenable recording is a gathering of tunes unlimited by boundaries of origin or style.  Some are familiar. Songs such as “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” “I Thought About You” and “The Things We Did Last Summer” have been memorable themes from the soundtrack of American love life for decades. New Year’s Eve is a time of new beginnings. It’s the time to shut the door on the mistakes of old and vow to do better next year. Unfortunately, whether it’s getting finances in better shape, losing weight or quitting a smoking habit, few New Year’s resolutions make it through February.

Indeed, a study by the authors of a book on behavioral change found that 98% of those who made New Year’s resolutions failed to change their bad behaviors. The problem isn’t willpower, said Joseph Grenny, the best-selling co-author of “Change Anything.” It’s really that the deck is stacked against change. Your habits, friends and even the television shows you watch, are likely to encourage the status quo.

Few people understand the multitude of factors that hold us back from changing behaviors so we imagine that the problem is simply a lack of willpower, he added. In fact, what’s usually lacking are the skills to identify and remove the hurdles that trip us up.

Unless you want to live up to those “never change” yearbook cliches, it’s time to take a look at seven ways to beat the odds and keep your New Year’s resolutions.

Should breast-feeding moms be excused from jury duty?  The Michigan Senate is now considering a bill already passed by the House that would give the mothers with a note from a nurse, doctor or midwife,  an automatic exemption from jury duty.

WWJ’s Laura Bonnell explains that right now, that decision is up to an individual judges’ discretion.
