George Benson is almost 70 years old but he shows no signs of slowing down.  His newest CD, Guitar Man, was honored as Best Jazz Album at the 43rd Annual NAACP Image Awards and he is embarking on a summertime tour of Europe.

Detroit’s fashion industry blossomed during Saturday’s Fashion In Detroit 2012 (FID) event. The sold-out-event drew a crowd of press, local vendors, and fashionistas to MotorCity Casino’s Sound Board to celebrate Metro Detroit fashion.

Members of the press and social media gathered in the social media lounge to mingle, tweet, facebook, and share everything FID related online. Across from Sound Board was the Market Detroit room.

Market Detroit provided guests and press the opportunity to meet the designers, purchase apparel, talk, eat, and learn more about the designs during the intermissions. FID 2012 consisted of ten runway shows for the day, therefore time was of the utmost importance.

FID 2012 kicked off promptly at noon with the International Academy of Design & Technology and Dana Keaton’s JCC Project Runway Detroit Student Show. The student-produced show exhibited fun, innovative, and creative designs that were made of recycled materials. Some of the materials included tea bags, car fabrics, cardboards, plastic bottles, and ties.

Free health screenings for obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dental and vision will be offered along with HIV testing, counseling and referrals. Donations will cover the health screenings for the first 300 participants.

In addition to the health screenings, the event will feature a community health resource fair, live entertainment by local vocalist Vonn’e and light refreshment. Community showers, new and slightly used clothing will also be available. Licensed cosmetologists will be on hand to provide shampoos, hair cuts and styling services. Over 150 volunteers are expected to help deliver services to participants.

Monetary gifts and in-kind donations (e.g. food, new clothing, personal care items, toiletries, and services, etc.) are welcome; dollars collected will be allocated toward grants for blood testing services. Clothing donations are being accepted at Bert’s Marketplace weekdays from 11:30am-1pm and from 4pm-7pm. Only new or laundered clothing items will be accepted. There is a particular need for men’s clothing of all sizes and new undergarments for women, men and children. Radio Music Society is a blend of R&B and Pop-Jazz, but still pleases fans of her previous works. The album also marks the first time that Esperanza has sung completely in English. Earlier work found some songs in both Spanish and Portuguese.

The album is smooth and polished, yet all over the place. Radio Music Society musically casts a wide net and succeeds at it. I can say that I was one of those people watching the 2011 GRAMMYs and exclaiming “Who is Esperanza Spalding?!” when she won. This album explained who Esperanza is. Songs that speak out and protest the justice system and news media, songs about love, and ”City Of Roses” is a song entirely about her childhood home of Portland.

“Crowned & Kissed” is the song that stuck with me the most. It is a love song with a big horn section, that had me picturing the members of Chicago performing with her.

Beginning to end, Radio Music Society is great listen. Existing fans are taken care of and will entice new fans to pick up Esperanza’s previous albums.
